The Victorian Race Walking Club

The Winter Season occurs between April and September and covers the Australian winter. Conditions are generally superb for road walking with mild winter temperatures, fast courses and lots of competition for all age groups.     

  

VRWC AND AV ROADWALK CHAMPIONSHIPS, MIDDLE PARK, SUNDAY 26 JULY 2026

Perfect conditions (sunny, still and mild) greeted the 47 walkers in attendance for the latest round of AV and VRWC Championships at Middle Park. The day's proceedings kicked off with the Victorian Open 30km Championships, won as usual by Rhydian Cowley, with NSW walker Dylan Richardson coming home second, both with strong performances. Marcus Wakim and Hannah Mison rounded out the field with first time finishes in this demanding distance.

The highlight of the Victorian Underage Roadwalk Championships was the performance of 15 year old Ela Uzun whose time of 22:23 smashed the Australian U16 and U18 Records. Ela seems to record PBs and break records just about every time she sets foot on a racing circuit. Angus Shuttleworth, Matilda Read and Fletcher Reid also stood out in fields with lots of strong performances.

VRWC INTERVALS RACES AND ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 18 JULY 2026

A day as close to perfect as you could wish for greeted the 32 walkers who fronted for the annual Intervals and non-points scratch races, the relatively modest turnout this week being due partly to illnesses and the coinciding LAVic Regional crosscountry championships.

The 5X2km saw Jonathan Ho turn out the fastest set of reps for a 21-sec variation in clocking a total 10km time of 53:08. Shaun Lewis’s differential was barely greater, 23 secs across the 5 laps, while Kevin Cassidy was another to range over less than 30 secs. If you discount Karyn O’Neill’s fourth lap (in which she was ‘shepherding’ a younger athlete), her variation was 12 secs, leaving the lads in the shade! In the 3X2km it was Grace Louey who edged out Mya McClure on rep time spread, 18secs to 20secs, although Mya clocked the fastest 6km aggregate. An especially pleasing showing was that of 10yo Abigail Verity, whose three legs for a 6km total – by far the most she’s covered in a race to date – was a plucky effort indeed. The 2X2km had 9 finishers. Erlyn Singh’s first 2km was just 4secs shy of her own PB with the second being a tougher ask, but still only 27secs slower, while Emily Smith’s differential was a reasonable 22 secs. 10yo Fletcher Walters was the only one in the field to negative-split his laps, also clocking the best variation of the day – a mere 6 seconds! Two other young leapers into the unknown, Ava Pravednikov and Bowie Clarke, clocked the only PBs in the Intervals race by margins of 1:14 and 0:14 respectively. Ava’s second rep also beat her old time by a second. Now that’s a good day’s work!

The three scratch races were highlighted by three massive PB performances, the most substantial being that of Harper O’Toole who ripped 2:28 from her only previous 3km time. For her part, Aria di Benedetto had also raced 3km only once before, reducing that time by 1:13 to win in 17:08. The other PB effort of the day came in the 2km via another newcomer, Holly Brooks, who demolished her first time at the distance by nearly a minute with 15:20. Very encouraging to see such huge leaps of improvement in our young members.

VRWC ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 11 JULY 2026

Another encouraging field of 50, although buffeted by a freezing nor’westerly headwind each lap, managed to return 11 PBs amongst them. Ela Uzun was certainly in no mood to let the wind push her around, claiming the Club U16 to Open Women’s road 3km records with her 13:02. She now has a lock on every one of them from U9 to Open. Other big improvers were Jordan Galbraith (0:49), Shaun Lewis (also 0:49), Aria di Benedetto (0:41) and newcomer Savannah Brooks (0:44 in her second race with us.) Savannah hails from Camperdown and raced in the recent LAVic road titles, and we look forward to seeing more of her as the season unfolds. Six-year-old Tex Reid is making huge progress and a 1:06 PB over 1km was a fine result.
The 5km saw Indigo Marshall-Moodie and Lunah Ibrahim make their first tries at the distance for good first-up times of 28:59 and 30:53, with Aangi Shah bringing home a 23-sec PB, despite the wind offering no help. Meanwhile, Fletcher Reid and Bowie Clarke took big steps up over 3km, reflecting their commitment to progressing. Caitlyn Shipham and Holli Burrell each shaved 11 secs from their 1km bests, showing the benefit of regular racing.

VRWC,VMA AND RWA POSTAL ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 4 JULY 2026

Saturday’s line-up of 62 starters for the 2026 RWA Challenge and Masters 10km eclipsed last year’s 50 and was the best seen at Middle Park for a minor championship and points meeting since before Covid … very heartening for those who’ve striven to rebuild the Club’s membership which was left pretty much gutted by the pandemic. Conditions were close to perfect and the racing standard was high, with 21 PBs being set.

Carolyn Rosenbrock and Shaun Lewis took fastest time honours in the Masters 10km titles, while it was pleasing to see Sarah Brennan make her first appearance at Middle Park for a fair time. It was also a treat – as it always is – to welcome our Kiwi prodigal David Smythe back to the fold. This race has always meant a lot to David and it was great to see him back and giving it his all after a period of indifferent health.

We were pleased to welcome internationals Elizabeth McMillen (NSW) and Olivia Sandery (SA) back to Middle Park for the Postal Challenge races. Lizzy will join Jemima Montag, Bec Henderson, Isaac Beacroft, Dec Tingay and Tim Fraser on the plane to Glasgow in two weeks and she was after a quick time. She got it with her third fastest 10km performance, clocking 42:52 which was also her fastest time on the road. For Olivia, in preparation for a Half-marathon in Japan later this year, 46:35 was reasonable tempo hit-out, while Marcus Wakim’s 44:01 was a great return after recovering from surgery. Seeing these three fast guns at work beside them was valuable to our enthusiastic youngsters. Nothing encourages speed like the excitement of being in the middle of it

Shaun Lewis, Jade Chitty and Jia Wen Heng made the most of the size and quality of the 10k field to post multi-minute PBs, while Addison Frenken burst through the 30 min barrier for 5km for the first time. Kobe Lewis and Erlyn Singh were the biggest 3km improvers and are reaping the rewards for their consistent racing. Meanwhile, the Bremners would have headed back to the far south-west happy with their three substantial PBs, none more so than mum Tamai who’d ripped 1:20 from her 2km best

Five first-timers, four PBs and a new Club record were the returns in the 1.5km, in which 10 of the 12 starters beat their handicaps. Most impressive was Ryder Reid who raced with a heavily bandaged elbow – never great for a walker – that didn’t stop him breaking through for his first 8:00-plus result ahead of Taylah Bremner. The Club record went to  who inaugurated a new W80+ 1.5km road mark with her 11:44.

VRWC AND LAVIC ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 27 JUNE 2026

We had an excellent turnout of 45 walkers for our annual VRWC Guess Your Time roadwalk meet at Middle Park on Saturday afternoon. The best time estimates of the day went to Gwen Steed and Fletcher Reid (each only 1 second off their predicted time). Winners of each race division/sheet were able to pick from the prizes table. VRWC AND LAVIC ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 20 JUNE 2026

Our latest VRWC roadwalks at Middle Park saw 44 walkers in action, contesting distances from 1km to 10km. It has been a very week and miserable week but the weather cleared in time for our Saturday afternoon races.

Well done to the many walkers who tested themselves out over their longest ever race distances - Matilda Read and Sarah Bevin (10km), Ella Harris, Addison Frenken and Caitlyn Shipham (5km) and Ryder Reid, Bowie Clarke and Abigail Verity (3km). Of those who competed in distances over which they had previously raced, there were lots of PBs - special mentions to Jonathan Ho, Arthur Robinson, Mietta Morgan, Harper de Sachau, Fletcher Reid, Erlyn Singh, Kobe and Corey Lewis, Anouk Morgan and Eden Patten.

VRWC AND LAVIC ROADWALKS, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 13 JUNE 2026

VRWC hosted the annual LAVIC Roadwalk Championships last Saturday afternoon at Middle Park. It was a big meet with 93 walkers in total. The wind made things a bit tougher for the young walkers but the rain held off until the last races were underway, so we were lucky indeed! The LAVIC officials were out in force to ensure that all went smoothly during the day and VRWC Competition directory Mark Donahoo kept a tight lid on proceedings.

The LAVIC championships started with the U9 1km Walk and finished with the U17 3km Walk.

AV, AV SCHOOLS, VRWC AND VMA CHAMPIONSHIPS, MIDDLE PARK, SUNDAY 24 MAY 2026

Sunday morning saw one of the big VRWC winter season meets, with the club hosting AV, AV Schools, VRWC and VMA Championships at Middle Park. The weather was perfect and the large attendance of 53 walkers ensured exciting races.

The first cab off the rank was the Half Marathon Championships and we were excited to have lots of our top international walkers in attendance - Jemima Montag, Bec Henderson, Will Thompson, Rhydian Cowley and Dylan Richardson. While it was just a solid training hitout for each of them, with surges and recovery laps intersperced throughout the race, the final times were still impressive and the standard of walking was wonderful. I never cease to be amazed by the quality of our top Australians. Will and Rhydian walked side by side until the final couple of laps when Will cleared away to take the title with a time of 1:30:41. Jemima and Bec also walked alongside each other until the final few laps when Jemima cleared out to take the title with a time of 1:34:41. And a special mention for Carolyn Rosenbrock who completed her longest race distance ever - the half marathon!

The VRWC winter season continued on Saturday with 43 walkers testing themselves out over a variety of distances at Middle Park. Conditions were good - sunny and mild with a manageable wind. The latest round of our VRWC winter season last Saturday saw 48 walkers contesting a variety of distances at Middle Park. Conditions were excellent and the walkers made the most of it, with lots of PBs in the shorter distances and with a number of our younger walkers testing themselves out over longer distances. We have a lot of new club members in the young brigade and the standard of walking looks excellent to an old stager like me.

AV AND VRWC TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS, MENTONE, SATURDAY 25 APRIL 2026

The the VRWC winter season kicked off with a round of Victorian and VRWC Track Champiobships at Dolomore Oval, Mentone, on Saturday afternoon. It's a long trip down south but we were pleased to see a healthy turnout of 43 walkers testing themselves on a sunny but windy day.

The main event on offer was the Victorian Open 10,000m Track Championship which saw wins to Melbourne based Dylan Richardson of NSW (44:30) and Jemima Montag (43:16) who was back to racing after a year off (apart from one easy hitout in December). Jemima showed she is fully recovered now from her surgery and she is obviously keen to defend her Commonwealth Games title later this year. We also played host to Olivia Sandery of SA (44:00) and Hannah Mison (NSW) who is down in Melbourne for study.

VRWC Club Championships were also contested over 10,000m, 5000m, 3000m and 1500m. The standout performance came from Rebecca Henderson who scorched the track with her big PB of 5:58 in the 1500m. It's a long time since Bec did such a short race and it was an impressive walk which set a new VRWC Open 1500m record. Angus Shuttleworth also excelled with a 5000m PB time of 21:48 (a VRWC U15 Club Record). We also welcomed Bethany Franzke, Sylvia Ivanova, Marina Campinell, Taylah Bremner, Eve Lampert, Ava Pravednikov, Jaxon Campbell and Jake Howard who had their first walks with us.
